Overview

SMARTPLATE is a child nutrition initiative implemented by Child Space Organization to complement the Smart Children Club mentorship programme. The programme was established in response to the realization that many vulnerable children attending mentorship sessions were struggling with hunger, which negatively affected their attendance, concentration, participation, and emotional well-being.

Recognizing that children's mental health and overall development cannot be achieved without addressing their basic needs, SMARTPLATE provides nutritious meals during programme days, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, participate, and thrive in a safe and supportive environment.

Beyond addressing food insecurity, SMARTPLATE fosters dignity, inclusion, and a sense of belonging among children while strengthening community participation through the active involvement of parents and guardians.

How it started

Through weekly mentorship sessions since 2019, the organization observed a recurring challenge: many children were missing sessions or attending while hungry because they lacked adequate food at home.

Hunger significantly affected children's ability to concentrate, regulate their emotions, actively participate, and fully benefit from psychosocial support. It also contributed to irregular attendance, reduced confidence, and limited engagement in talent development and leadership activities.

Objectives

1

Improve children's nutrition and well-being

Provide nutritious meals that promote healthy growth, physical development, emotional well-being, and improved learning among vulnerable children.

2

Enhance participation in mentorship

Reduce absenteeism and increase active participation by addressing hunger as a barrier to attendance.

3

Promote mental health through nutrition

Strengthen children's emotional resilience and concentration by integrating nutrition into our mental health programming.

4

Strengthen community ownership

Engage parents, guardians, volunteers, and community members in meal preparation and programme implementation.

Programme impact

  • Improved attendance and retention in the Smart Children Club
  • Increased concentration, participation, and enthusiasm during sessions
  • Better emotional regulation and willingness to express themselves
  • Stronger integration of nutrition into mental health programming
  • Increased community ownership — many parents volunteer during meal preparation
  • One parent has since become the programme's dedicated cook

Food is more than nourishment for the body — it is a foundation for emotional security, learning, healthy relationships, and positive child development.
